Sweet Summer: Growing Up With & Without My Dad is Bebe Moore Campbell's autobiographical sketch of her life from elementary to adult years. Campbell's parents split when she was young so her time was divided between her mom's in Philadelphia (school year) and her grandma's/dad's in North Carolina/Virginia (summers). Throughout the course of the book we see Bebe go from a young girl who idolized her father to a young woman who was willing to do all she could to help her father in his later years of life. Bebe's father was also paraplegic (sp?), so his injury added an extra layer to this story.
Bebe Moore Campbell is one of the first adult authors I read. When I was about 10 or 11, I'd outgrown The Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley High, & the books of that ilk. I'm a hella daddy's girl so I've been wanting to read this one for a while. I really enjoyed this. It's a rare chance that we get to see how people got to where they are (were, in some cases) in life. I'm nosey by nature so I tend to really enjoy autobiographies/biographies so long as they are well written. Campbell manages to tell her story with the finesse that she used as a fiction writer. I know earlier I said that I was unable to be drawn in by this book (among others), but it is not to the detriment of this book. I think I was just a little burned out on reading. Nevertheless, I definitely recommend this as a read.
